Charlie has worked for more than 30 years bringing expert gardening information to home gardeners through radio, television, talks, online, and the printed page. He delights in making gardening information simple, easy, fun and accessible to everyone. His energy, exuberance, and love of the natural world also make Charlie an exciting public speaker and presenter. He has spoken at flower shows and to gardening groups, clubs, and Master Gardeners from Washington to Rhode Island. He formerly was the senior horticulturist and spokesperson for the National Gardening Association (NGA).
Currently, he also is a garden consultant and coach helping gardeners improve their skills.
Charlie has written for national magazines such as Organic Gardening contributed to many of the “Gardening for Dummies” titles, authoring Vegetable Gardening For Dummies in 2009. He wrote Northeast Fruit and Vegetable Growing in 2012, Month by Month in New England (2011), and Urban Gardening for Dummies(2013), Foodscaping (2015), and The Complete Guide to No-Dig Gardening (2020).
Charlie’s skills as a garden communicator extend beyond the printed page. He was the host of PBS’s Garden Smart, reaching more than 60 million households. He has also been a gardening expert on many national syndicated television shows on HGTV, The Discovery Channel, and PBS. In Vermont, he co-hosts “In The Garden” tips on the local CBS affiliate television station (WCAX-Channel 3), a weekly, call-in radio show on WJOY-1230AM, has weekly show on Vermont Public Radio called the All Things Gardening, and a weekly show on Connecticut Public Radio called Connecticut Garden Journal.
