A Piet Oudolf Story

March 15, 2021 By Deborah Chud

https://greatgardenspeakers.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Pitch-deck-1.mp4

A personal introduction to the design principles of the leading naturalistic landscape & garden designer in the world, Piet Oudolf. Deborah Chud’s 5 years of research on Oudolf’s gardens led to her Oudolf-inspired garden and the only known database of his plant combinations. Her talk is part memoir, part history, and part design theory–with some practical Oudolfian “dos and don’ts” for gardeners at every level.

REVIEWS of “A Piet Oudolf Story”

Arnold Arboretum, Harvard University

“Landscape Design Consultant and Educator, Deborah Chud, gives a thorough, informative, and engaging presentation on her personal exploration into the aesthetics of Piet Oudolf’s design theories. Her understanding, interpretation, and implementation of his principals clearly derives from extensive research, which she covers in detail, and a personal affinity for his philosophy.”

Really great thorough lecture, most insightful elementary principals behind “what makes Piet Oudolf’s designs work” explained. I was wondering lately why the white/greenish coneflower (Echinacea Alba) next to the violet pinkish Betony (Stachys “Hummelo”) wasn’t “working” in my small frontgarden: now I know: thanks!

“I must tell you I truly enjoyed the recent presentation by Deborah Chud.  What an inspiring story she has in learning so much in so little time!  I was enthralled by how she connected the combinations that Piet has put together through his decades of work. It was a wonderful perk of being a DBG volunteer to have this opportunity to watch her presentation.”

Thanks so much for presenting today- even as a non-gardener I found it fascinating, so I was not at all surprised by all of the comments and messages saying how interesting and high quality a presentation it was!

About Deborah Chud

Deborah Chud is a Massachusetts landscape design consultant and educator. Her five years of research on Piet Oudolf have generated the most comprehensive existing database of his plant combinations. Last summer, she presented her work at an international symposium organized by Noel Kingsbury (“Piet Oudolf: How Does He Do It?”), under the aegis of gardenmasterclass.org. She has also presented to members of the following institutions and organizations: Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Harvard University’s Arnold Arboretum, the JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State University, Toronto Botanical Garden, and Delaware Botanic Gardens. The latter two public gardens contain Oudolf-designed sections. Currently, she is collaborating with the education department at Toronto Botanical Garden on a multi-session online course to coincide with the restoration of their Piet Oudolf Entry Walk. This season, she will appear at the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C. and in the Ecological Landscape Alliance's "Wednesday Walks in the Garden" series .
